March 2015 Powder Horn News article
IOWA BLACK POWDER FEDERATION MEMBERS and
all black powder/muzzleloader shooters and all readers of the Powder Horn News I would like to take this opportunity to
introduce myself as the newest IBPF (Iowa Black Powder Federation) board
member. My name is Leon Curran of Even before I purchased my first gun in
1975, muzzle loading guns has interested me for many years. In 1995 I built a 50 caliber flint long rifle
which I still hunt and shoot with today. I have been hunting with muzzleloaders
since 1984 and took my first deer in 1988.
Since then I have taken one to four deer a year, mostly does and some
bucks, all with a side lock muzzleloader.
Primarily I am a meat hunter and eat all I take. I also started pheasant and turkey hunting
with a muzzleloader in 1999 or 2000. As a long time member of the IBPF, I would
like to promote black powder to younger generations so the legacy and knowledge
will be continued. I am a member of the Amana Sportsman’s
Club and also shoot at the public range in My object is to promote clubs shoots
including the IBPF and National Muzzle Loading rifle Association shoots. My philosophy
is to shoot as much as possible and have fun while doing it. The current IBPF Shoots fits these
parameters. See the IBPF shoot schedule
on this page, come as either a shooter or spectator. Looking forward to seeing you at a 2015
shoot……………… IBPF Board Member 319-828-4953 or cell 319-400-5341 2015

IBPF POSTAL MATCHES The IBPF has once again elected to conduct an annual black
powder postal competition. Your
participation by simply purchasing targets is an important part of protecting
the IBPF’s financial well being! Should
you decide to help by purchasing targets for personal practice, to participate
in the event or to simply contribute, the IBPF appreciates your support. The “competition” aspect of this event is far broader and
longer lasting than any other year. The
competition period has been extended from now until December 1, 2015. Hopefully that will allow plenty of time to
participate no matter what your schedule.
In the past the event ended before many of you even considered getting
out your favorite hunting rifle before that season arrived. The other expansion involves the sheer number
of events that are offered. This year
there are 8 (eight). As follow: (1) Percussion rifle with any
sights, (2) Flintlock rifle with open
sights, (3) In-line rifle with any sights or any
projectile, (4) Smoothbore with front sight
only, (5) Sighted smoothbore with front
and rear sights, (6) Muzzle loading military musket, (7) Any muzzle loading pistol (8) Black powder cartridge rifle
with open sight/cast bullets.
All competitions are intended to be fired from the ‘off hand’
position at 25 yards. If you are a black
powder enthusiasts there is something here for you. There is a “TWIST”!
The Board of Directors for the IBPF formally stated that should this
postal event prove to be “not self sustaining from a financial prospective”
this will be the last IBPF postal event.
Let’s not take that as a threat, rather let us all take that as a
challenge! This year the target is again all new, fun and yet
challenging. As always additional
targets are available on an unlimited re-entry basis for the low cost of $1.00
each. These are available an all IBPF
events or via USPS from: IBPF, First, second and third place IBPF medals will be awarded in
each class with special recognition given to each winning competitor on the
IBPF website and listing in the Powder Horn News The IBPF
appreciates your support, please enjoy the event no matter how you choose to
participate and “GOOD LUCK”. IBPF Board
